Makalu is a near-perfect four-sided pyramid standing alone east of Everest, and it has a reputation among 8000m climbers as the one that bites. The standard North-West Ridge is straightforward enough to the Makalu La at 7,400 m, then turns serious: mixed rock steps, a long exposed ridge and a summit pyramid that has to be climbed rather than walked. Add high winds, a remote base camp and a walk-in through some of the least visited forest in Nepal, and you get an expedition that asks more of your technique than of your patience.

You are met on landing and taken to your hotel in Kathmandu.
Over the next days we complete the government briefing, finalise permits, and go through your personal equipment item by item with your expedition leader. Anything missing can still be bought or hired at this point.
The team travels to the mountain by a flight to Tumlingtar and a seven-day trek up the Barun valley through Makalu-Barun National Park.
The approach is paced for acclimatization rather than speed — the days are deliberately short, and the altitude gain is controlled.
We establish Makalu Base Camp (4,870 m) with dining, kitchen, communication and medical tents.
The Sherpa team holds the traditional puja ceremony before anyone steps onto the mountain, and we run refresher sessions on fixed-line technique, crevasse rescue and oxygen systems.
The heart of the expedition. The team makes progressive rotations up to the higher camps — 4 camps are established on this route — sleeping high and returning to base camp to recover between each cycle.
Meanwhile the high-altitude team fixes rope and stocks the upper mountain.
When the forecast gives a usable window, the team moves back up the mountain camp by camp for the summit bid on Makalu (8,485 m) via the North-West Ridge.

After the summit the team descends to base camp, strips the high camps and carries everything off the mountain — we leave nothing behind.
The return journey retraces the approach, ending with a celebration dinner and your summit certificate.
