Cholatse stands between Gokyo and the Khumbu valley, and its north face is one of the great Himalayan test-pieces — not what we climb. The south-west ridge is the standard line and it is still a serious alpine route: steep snow and ice, rock steps, two committing camps and enough exposure that the descent needs as much planning as the ascent. It sits under an expedition-peak permit rather than a trekking-peak one, which is the honest reflection of what it asks. For an experienced alpinist who wants a hard Khumbu summit without the cost and duration of an 8,000 m permit, there are few better objectives in Nepal.

The team reaches the mountain by a flight to Lukla and a seven-day Khumbu trek via Namche Bazaar, Phortse and Dzongla to base camp below the south-west ridge.
The walk-in is paced for acclimatization rather than speed — short days, controlled altitude gain and rest days where the profile needs them.
We establish Cholatse Base Camp (4,900 m) with dining, kitchen and toilet tents, and run a route briefing and a systems check with your guide — anchors, abseil set-up and descent plan — rather than a beginners’ course.

The team moves up to establish the 2 high camps this route uses, carrying loads and sleeping high before dropping back to rest.

When the forecast gives a usable window the team leaves high camp in the dark for the summit of Cholatse (6,440 m) via the South-west ridge.
After the summit we descend all the way to base camp the same day.
We strip the high camp and carry everything off the mountain — nothing is left behind.
The return retraces the approach at a faster pace, ending with a celebration dinner in Kathmandu and your climbing certificate.
